The Baltimore Museum of Art

Looking for something free and cultural, with beautiful sights? You need to check out The Baltimore Museum of Art. The BMA is located on Museum Drive, right in the heart of the city of Baltimore. It is a 210,000 square foot museum that includes 10 different buildings and wings, outdoor sculpture gardens, and over 97,000 art pieces inside! It is truly beautiful, and the best part is, it’s completely free! The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursday’s until 9 p.m.

According to their website, the BMA “connects art to Baltimore and Baltimore to the world, embodying a commitment to artistic excellence and social equity in every decision from art presentation, interpretation and collecting.” They are all about welcoming anyone and everyone to experience the beauty and diversity of art from all around the world, dating back centuries.

The BMA was originally founded in 1914 with just one single painting. Their belief and core values stand with the idea that access to art is critical for a “vibrant and healthy civic life.” They pride themselves in starting from the bottom and working hard to create the legacy that it is now known for. Through collecting pieces that date back from the 18th century to the present, the BMA makes sure that their collection, research, presentation and interpretation of the art reaches the most high standard. One thing that I loved about walking through was that there was so much diversity in the art. The art truly embodies excellence, fairness, relevance and social justice, as described on their website.

Inside the museum, you feel as if you have entered into a time capsule. Their collection of contemporary art spans from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and the Pacific Islands. There are works from more than 200 African states such as jewelry, pottery, weapons, clothing accessories and more. Every room felt like you were truly stepping into that area of the world. Their collection of Asian art includes more than 3,000 objects from China, Japan, India, and more! You can see a beautiful 15th century bronze sculpture, hand crafted pottery, books, and paintings.

I do not want to spoil all of the art pieces, because the BMA is a must-visit. It is such a relaxing way to learn and see different cultures firsthand. I really loved my visit, and I absolutely admire their mission, bringing art and culture to Baltimore, in a free yet informative way. Definitely go and pay the Baltimore Museum of Art a visit!
